Artist Biography
Elyse Gomez, a mixed-media painter and sculptor born in Lafayette, Louisiana, draws upon her heritage in the Eastern Delaware Nation, Mapuche ancestry, her mother’s Cajun/Creole lineage, and her father’s Chilean roots. Her practice investigates Latin and Indigenous identity through the excavation of forgotten histories and the remembrance carried by land and nature.
Artist Statement
Through color, texture, and formal experimentation, she reclaims ancestral presence while exposing the blind spots of colonization and genocide. By reimagining traditional practices through a contemporary lens, she demands that cultural memory be recognized as both vital to the human condition and a path toward understanding one’s roots.
