The Art Market
Curated By:

Titled The Art Market, this gallery reimagines the intersection of art, consumerism, and perception, challenging the commodification of creativity and its implications on cultural and material value. Inspired by the ideas of Harvard economist Michael Sandel, the project interrogates how commodification, market mechanisms, and context influence how we perceive and assign value to art.
This experience transforms a gallery into a fabricated retail space, disrupting traditional models of art exhibitions to create conflict within the viewer. Are you meant to interact with this experience as a consumer or spectator?
The form and presentation challenge psychological scripts—sets of expectations and behaviors that people use to familiar navigate situations or environments. Artworks displayed on clothing hangers and racks create a striking contrast between the intimate and grandiose nature of traditional galleries and the impersonal, transactional nature of retail environments. By embedding art in this setting, the exhibit raises the critical question of how the market's language—price tags, displays, and promotional materials—influences our perception of an artwork's value and significance.
