ANDEWSAK

ARTIST BIO:

Andew Sakamoto is a visual artist from California, producing work out of Bolm Arts in Austin, Texas. The essence of Andew’s art lies in finding magic within the mundane. His approach to painting is deliberate and process-oriented, in contrast to the chaotic free-form expression of

his illustrations. By utilizing both mediums, he unveils the interplay between the conscious and subconscious when processing everyday life.

Andew selects objects to become characters in his work, reclaiming the power of set and setting. With an endless curation of flowers in and out of the studio, his recent floral works explore motion and a continual shift from one unique moment to the next, through life and in death.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My practice is driven by a personal need for spiritual discovery, anchoring the self to something powerful and unknown, but collectively shared. During a time that I can only describe as an era of overwhelming confusion, brought about by social media and technological hysteria, I do my best to set aside autogenerated narratives, and reflect upon my experience of reality; confiding in family, friends, and new acquaintances to put my work into perspective. A lack of formal art education allows me the freedom to play with mediums and concepts. I use my artistic faults to guide the audience toward inner reflection and hope, while maintaining an aesthetic curated from my past interests of graphite drawing and digital comic making. With imagery of flowers and light, the goal is to garner a shared imagining of a more positive future.
